A defiantly lo-fi, ripe-for-rediscovery transmission from the early-aughts microbudget boom, Mary Bronstein's rawer-than-raw portrait of toxic friendship traces the emotional fallout that follows a weekend road trip gone very wrong as friends Rachel (played by Bronstein herself), Alice (Amy Judd), and Gen (Greta Gerwig) descend into a frighteningly relatable spiral of selfishness, simmering anger, and passive aggression. Bronstein's fearlessly uncompromising study of twentysomething emotional immaturity is enhanced by the evocative cinematography of Sean Price Williams, who captures each all-too-real moment with warts-and-all immediacy.
