London, just before the outbreak of World War II, Colonel Cronin says goodbye to Myra, the woman he's been deeply in love with since they first met in 1917. They had planned to be together, but the war had other plans, forcing Cronin to leave for the French front. Soon after, Myra discovers his name among the "killed in action" notices. Jobless, her life falls apart, leaving her trapped between complete destitution and turning to prostitution.
