Breaking conventions of the dreary biopic, Alex Cox's Walker was famously his final feature for any Hollywood studio. Cox owns it: "I spent Universal's money on making a film in Nicaragua, in collaboration with the Sandinista government." By telling the story of 19th century filibuster William Walker against the backdrop of the Nicaraguan Revolution, Cox makes a pointed critique of America's recurrent, predatory foreign policies. Joe Strummer's soundtrack and Rudy Wurlitzer's screenplay add to the punk politics of this wild and unusual film.
