The film is set in early nineteenth-century Australia, where the effete Charles Adare (Michael Wilding) arrives in the company of his uncle, the new governor. The ambitious but indolent young man is befriended by a gruff landowner and ex-convict (Joseph Cotten), whose wife (Ingrid Bergman) is a social outcast on the verge of going crazy thanks to the nefarious housemaid (Margaret Leighton) who runs her household and supplies her copious booze.
