It's convenient for a director to cast himself as the lead character, which is exactly what Clint Eastwood does in this movie. His character isn't particularly striking, either physically or morally. He's sort of a loser who ends up saving a death row inmate by conducting his own investigation for a news report, as he's a journalist. The story has its intriguing aspects, but it does drag on at times.

First of all the premise is nothing new as these stories with proof to exonerate a convicted murderer at the 11th hour has been seen all too many times. This dreary story literally holds no weight at all as a film. It has got to be one if not the worst film Clint Eastwood has made. Non watchable. On any level.

This movie is incredibly touching and encouraging for those who have been wrongfully accused.

I watched "True Crime" (1999) starring the legendary Clint Eastwood! In this unbelievable yet true story, Eastwood proves beyond a doubt that he is the greatest actor alive today. His presence is so commanding that even the silver screen can barely contain him as he takes on six men at once. Without Eastwood's powerful performance, justice would be nonexistent in this world. Kudos once again to Eastwood, the righteous avenger, and to the director for crafting such a gripping thriller in "True Crime"! Dominique Desroches, part-time movie reviewer.

The movie's well-constructed storyline keeps things engaging, though it may not rank among Clint Eastwood's finest directorial efforts. However, the condemned man's overly resigned demeanor, particularly when the journalist attempts to assist him, works against the film, robbing us of a richer emotional experience. Nonetheless, it's still worth watching - even a middling Eastwood flick offers a satisfying cinematic experience.

How could anyone not enjoy this fantastic film starring Clint Eastwood, with such an outstanding script?

You can pretty easily figure out how the movie will end, but it's still really good. The plot is well-crafted.

I rented this movie and it feels like I completely wasted my 3 dollars!!! The story is not very convincing at all. The suspense is so weak that it's boring, and the whole movie lacks any sense of realism. If you're looking to just throw away 3 dollars or more, you'd get a better return by spending it on a bag of chips and some liquor. The film wants us to believe that a broke guy in his 60s or older is somehow able to sleep with anyone he wants. There are several glaring errors throughout the movie as well.

I'd give the movie an 8, but two things muddle the otherwise great story. First, Clint Eastwood's character is a total jerk, a scumbag, and a loser... not very heroic, so it gets old fast watching him hit on anything with breasts in sleazy bars. Second, the ending is predictable and lame. These two issues really drag down the score.

A compelling film, largely due to Clint Eastwood's intriguing character. He portrays a man with a complex mix of virtues and flaws, a refreshing departure from the simplistic, black-and-white characters often seen in American movies.

Nothing special, just another rehashed story that's been done to death in countless other movies. The ending is really bad and feels rushed. Clint Eastwood seems like an amateur playing a bumbling, corrupt journalist. Basically, it's pretty weak... but hey, it's a way to kill time on a rainy day.

I really enjoyed this movie, contrary to most of the other reviewers here. I think it tells a great story and is a well-made film. As for those complaining about too many clichés, I couldn't care less. Clichés are a part of life, so what's the big deal?

What a letdown of a film! It's as if Clint Eastwood is just doing this for a paycheck to fund his next big movie. Everything feels so unoriginal and derivative. The characters are poorly written, the dialogue is cringeworthy, and the attempts at suspense fall completely flat. Steer clear of this one!

It was so dull that I never made it to the end of the movie. I walked out an hour into the film.

An average movie with a familiar plot, but Clint Eastwood gives a good performance.

Wow!!!!!!! The story is good, but Eastwood's performance is really weak. He ought to stop directing films and acting at the same time - it's too much for one person to handle. That's why this movie is so poorly made, with lots of slow parts and especially bad direction. Only worth renting on a really rainy day when even the W-rated movies are already checked out.

The dud of the year!!! Totally predictable from start to finish, with cookie-cutter dialogue and hackneyed directing. Top tip: Definitely one to watch if you're looking to cap off a lousy meal with a mind-numbingly boring evening!

Overall, a good movie, although it feels a bit familiar. However, I think it's missing something to make a movie like this more engaging.

An unpretentious movie that's not too far-fetched either. Clint Eastwood at his finest, with some downright hilarious scenes featuring James Wood. Worth watching.

I thought the movie was pretty good overall, though it's true the story moves at a slow pace. The fact that the convict gets removes any suspense from the climax!

The movie is definitely not one of Clint Eastwood's best. It seemed like everyone was constantly smoking. The ending was predictable. There was too much focus on the "bad guy" character (smoking, drinking, cheating, being an absent father, etc.) which didn't really fit with the rest of the film. On the bright side, the actors did a good job portraying their characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was filled with emotion, humor, and suspense. What I appreciated most about it was the screenplay. This is what good filmmaking looks like.

I have to say, this isn't a good film. Clint Eastwood fails to make the unbelievable story, filled with cliches and implausibilities, convincing even for a moment. The slow-moving plot is packed with absurd scenes that could have easily been cut (Clint cheats on his wife, sleeps with his editor's wife, falls off the wagon... etc.). Instead of all these scenes defining a character Clint has played for years, I would have preferred a more thoughtful treatment of the subject. In summary, despite the intriguing premise (a journalist discovers at the last minute that a death row inmate is innocent), the film doesn't deliver on its potential. It meanders aimlessly for over two hours. However, I must commend James Woods for his excellent, unhinged performance as the newspaper director.

A good story that falls flat in its execution. Boring. Clint Eastwood no longer has the right look for this role. The pacing is very uneven. The tobacco companies must have paid a lot to make Eastwood smoke so much. You can almost smell the tobacco when leaving the theater!

A solid film, quintessential Clint Eastwood. I'm a fan, and here he once again demonstrates his ability to do it all - directing and starring simultaneously. Pretty impressive.

This movie had the potential to be great, given its focus on investigative journalism. About half of the film is well-executed and of high quality. However, there's an excessive amount of drinking and driving portrayed. Eastwood's performance in this movie is not his best; he's too slow, which is somewhat off-putting. The supporting cast, on the other hand, delivers solid performances. All in all, it's a disappointing film.

A solid film with an engaging storyline. Clint Eastwood aims to prove he's still got it despite his age... Suspenseful moments milked for all they're worth, just like in every American movie. The inmate is portrayed convincingly, even though he's RESIGNED... to the injustice done to him.
