A miner's son (from Aspen, Colorado) and a high school drop-out, Harold Ross was hardly the sophisticated person one would imagine could start this urbane periodical. Yet Ross's natural sense of humor, his insatiable curiosity, his rugged background as a tramp newspaper reporter, and his uncanny ability to discover talent, were the perfect ingredients to create the understated, subtle wit which made The New Yorker famous.
