During World War II in occupied France, an American pilot named John (Ray Milland) is shot down while carrying a vital message behind enemy lines. After being rescued by the Resistance, he finds refuge in a nearby convent. There, a young novice named Clothilde (Barbara Britton, in a role originally envisioned for Ingrid Bergman) becomes drawn to him and resolves to aid in his escape to England. To evade the German soldiers pursuing him, John assumes the identity of the husband of Madame Bouchard, a woman from a neighboring village, as part of a daring plan to cross enemy territory.
