Jody Baxter is a boy growing up in post Civil War America. He has to come to terms with the loss of his siblings during the war, helping his mother and father on their farm which is barely just scraping by. He finds inspiration from caring for a motherless fawn, raising the creature with his own hands. But as the animal grows, he starts doing serious damage to the family's crops. Jody's ability to let go of his pet marks his ascension into adulthood.
