Embittered widow Helen Winter (MacDonald), a former concert singer, can't help blaming Lassie for her son's death. Needing help with her chores, she hires an orphan but initially remains aloof from the charming lad, who quickly bonds with the collie. After Lassie saves the boy from a terrible fire in the orphanage, Helen realizes that she loves the boy and forgives Lassie.
