Captain Herman Suvorin (Anton Walbrook) is an officer in the Russian imperial army at the beginning of the nineteenth century whose poverty and lower-class origins make him a pariah for his fellow officers. Seeking to win his fortune at the gambling tables, Suvorin hears tell of an elderly countess who reputedly sold her soul to the Devil for the secret of success at the card game Faro, and determines to seduce the noblewoman's young ward to gain her mistress' infernal knowledge.
