    J. PHINEAS STEVENS is the NUISANCE to which the title of the film refers. I actually enjoyed this very old, but not dated film from 1933 starring LEE TRACY at the beginning of his career doing what he does best; Lee is in top form in this fun rom-com as the KING OF THE FAST TALKERS persuading accident victims to SUE. Tracy shines in THIS and other light hearted films for which he became well known before taking on more dramatic roles in older age.

An ambulance chasing LAWYER gets tangled up with a female investigator (MADGE EVANS) out to end his SHYSTER ways.

THE NUISANCE is a delightful rom com with its absolutely novel but confounding premise and narrative. It seems to be the beginning, the father of that phenomenon we call "WHIPLASH" WILLIE. Lawyer PHINEAS and his drunkard doctor friend have a very neat set up getting to an accident a. s. a. p. before the police to carry out their somewhat illegitimate business practices.

This perfect scam feature involving shady lawyers and doctors well predates BILLY WILDER'S THE FORTUNE COOKIE for which Walter Matthau won a most deserved supporting Oscar as the shyster lawyer.

I'm pretty positive writer/director BILLY WILDER must have viewed and reviewed The Nuisance many times because much of what occurs in the 1966 THE FORTUNE COOKIE has already transpired on film in The Nuisance. Wilder adds his own genius to the affair turning COOKIE into a box office triumph.

This is one of the first and best films dealing with lawyers and doctors pulling scams. It's a fun piece which is often screened on TCM or TURNER. Look out for it. It's very good.
