Rose Morgan (Barbra Streisand), a professor of Romantic Literature still living with her mother (Lauren Bacall), desperately longs for passion in her life. Gregory Larkin (Jeff Bridges), a mathematics professor scarred by passionate relationships, seeks a sexless union based on friendship and respect. With almost nothing in common, they connect through a personal ad and a meddling sister, becoming best friends without physical attraction. They soon agree to an unconventional marriage built on intellectual passion rather than sexual heat, but as they meet, marry, attempt celibacy, and fall in love, they discover they are courting chaos.
