Endfield had to pay documentary director Charles de la Tour to front for him on this and other British films in the early and mid-fifties. Franklyn Pryor (Bridges) is an American in London, meeting a former girlfriend (Lister) and becoming involved in a complex set of intrigues relating to murder, smuggling, and theater. A cast of Dickensian characters, half comic and half threatening, reflect the director's own uncertainty and confusion in his new country -- without a passport and for a time threatened with deportation.
