It is 1850, and the brutality of institutionalized slavery has pushed Samuel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his family to attempt to escape from the tobacco plantation they have been forced to call their home for two generations. Heading north towards Canada, they move from one 'safe house' to another --- guided by members of the highly secret "Underground Railroad". As they run, they are tracked by Plimpton and his men, a ruthless hired slave hunters who constantly threaten Samuel and his family's survival. As they journey, his Grandmother Adira recalls the story of John Newton, a sea captain and slave trader in 1748 whose spiritual awakening in a storm in the mid Atlantic, inspires one of the greatest anthems of hope and freedom ever written. Adira tells the exciting true story of the secret struggle for the abolition of slavery, one man's spiritual redemption and the true meaning of freedom.
