It is 1850, and the brutality of institutionalized slavery has pushed Samuel (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his family to attempt to escape from the tobacco plantation they have been forced to call their home for two generations. Heading north towards Canada, they move from one 'safe house' to another --- guided by members of the highly secret "Underground Railroad".
