The friendship between two boys, one of whom is dying of AIDS, provides the basis for this touching drama. Erik is the new kid in town and feels like an outsider. Dexter is a local boy who was infected with AIDS through a blood transfusion; he too is an outsider. All though Erik's mother sternly warns him not to play with "that sick kid" next door, the two begin communicating over the fence. Soon Erik overcomes his fear and the two become best friends. Toward the end, the two take off on a rafting adventure down the Mississippi.
