Pianist Paul Dietrich (Richard Dreyfuss) was once the "next big thing" in the classical music world. Heidi Joan Schoonover (Amy Irving) is the new flavor of the month. When they meet in San Francisco, they make beautiful music together.
One minor stumbling block: They are supposed to be fierce competitors in the prestigious Hillman Competition. The event may be Paul's last chance to stay in the spotlight -- or it could make Heidi an overnight A-lister. Although Heidi's mentor, Greta Vandemann (Lee Remick), warns her about the perils of letting romance get in the way of your career, Heidi contemplates letting Paul win so that he can turn his life around. Meanwhile, Paul ponders allowing Heidi to take the gold medal so that she can find the success she deserves.
