The manager of a supermarket is refused membership of a club frequented by all the worthies in town. He fails to understand the reasons for his rejection. Is it because he's a shopkeeper; because of his Portuguese origins; because of his alchoholic mother? The fact that he was only one vote away from becoming a member makes him all the keener to know why he's not allowed in.
