Sweet Charity

Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine), a young New Yorker working as a dance hall hostess, has few prospects in life but always dreams that there is something better in store for her. Tired of her disreputable, difficult existence, Charity decides one day to fulfill her desires and goes to an employment agency to find a respectable job. Although her efforts lead only to humiliation, as she is leaving the building, Charity becomes stuck in a malfunctioning elevator with a neurotic actuary named Oscar (John McMartin), who, it turns out, could well be the man of her dreams.
