After being released on parole, a burglar (Dustin Hoffman) attempts to go straight, get a regular job, and live by the rules. But when he finds himself betrayed by a power-hungry parole officer, he quickly returns to a life of crime. He teams up with an old friend (Harry Dean Stanton) and sets out on a string of extremely dangerous robberies.
