The Frake family -- father Abel, mother Melissa, son Wayne, and daughter Margy -- hails from a farm in Banning, Texas, and heads to the annual Texas State Fair in Dallas. Wayne, focused on racing his red sportster against rival Red Hoertert, barely notices his fiancée Betty Jean's absence, while Margy yearns for a meaningful connection beyond her dull courtship with Harry Ware. At the fair, Melissa worries over her mincemeat entry amidst fierce commercial competition, and Abel struggles with his lethargic boar, Blueboy. Wayne falls for performer Emily Porter, and Margy is drawn to reporter Jerry Dundee, though both city dwellers hint at past romances. Their fleeting fairground connections face the test of contrasting lifestyles and uncertain futures.
