Traveling to Cuba in the wake of the Revolution, Agnès Varda intended to film a documentary in the nation. When the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry denied her permit to film while there, she resourcefully took hundreds and hundreds of photographs, which she later assembled into a different form of documentary, a narrated photo montage, that allows glimpses into the early years of Castro's Cuba.
