Preminger's film is based on George Bernard Shaw's play about Joan of Arc, the 15th-century heroine who helped rescue France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War. Joan was later burnt at the stake, accused of witchcraft. After a talent search for the actress to play Saint Joan, 18-year-old Jean Seberg of Marshalltown, Iowa, was selected from over 18,000 contestants.
