Ross Poldark returns home from the war In America to find his father has died, his land and his house are in ruin and his sweetheart is engaged to his cousin. His life in tatters, Ross has to start afresh, reopening a derelict mine with the aim of providing jobs and decent wages. Though his first love is lost to him, a chance encounter with a bedraggled urchin at a country fair changes the course of his life forever.
