When Louis Malle made this documentary 40 years ago, the Place de la Republique was not yet famous for the mourning after the attacks on Paris in January and November of 2015. Here, Malle finds the extraordinary in scenes of daily life, and for us, it can be something of an introduction to a place that has also been joyous.
