Director Pierre Schoendoerffer started as a war cinematographer for the French military during the first Indochina War. He subsequently became a full-fledged filmmaker and directed in 1962 'Platoon 317th', which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and still remains one of the best French war movies ever made. In 1967, Schoendoerffer also won the Academy Award for Best Documentary for 'The Anderson Platoon', one of the most important documentaries about the Vietnam war. Now in his eighties, he revisits his life and career, with a strong focus on the impact that his experience of the war during both the Indochina War and the Vietnam War had on him, and how this has influenced his works as a filmmaker.
