Teenage Pauline is spending the summer with her older cousin Marion at the family vacation house. She falls in with Marion's circle of friends and ex-lovers, bearing witness to their fickleness and deceit-hardly traits of the mature adults she imagined them to be. At times resembling a bedroom farce, this is the most intricate and layered of the Comedies and Proverbs, and possibly the best.
