Info
The film utilizes interviews with artists and writers influenced by Sebald's works, such as Adam Philips, Robert Macfarlane, Rick Moody and Tacita Dean, while taking its audience on a voyage through the bleakly beautiful landscape of coastal East Anglia, tracking the same walk that formed the basis of Sebald's most famous book, The Rings of Saturn. A darkly humorous mix of history, memoir, travelogue and rumination on time and loss, Saturn is the key to Gee's film, which tackles the same subjects.
A striking black-and-white visual experience, with some portions shot on 16mm, Patience (After Sebald) is meditative, digressive and quietly moving. It features plenty of Sebald's texts, as read by the actor Jonathan Pryce, and is required viewing for Sebald devotees, those seeking an introduction to the writer and fans of the documentary as art.
