Ticino often attracted nonconformist and unusual people, such as the Dadaists Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings. Generations of migrants have followed them, hoping to lead a better and more self-determined life. For them, Ticino became a homeland, a foreign homeland. A borderland. An Outland. Renowned author Michael Schindhelm, former general director of the Basel Theater and many other cultural institutions, born and raised in East Germany, has been living in Ticino for 15 years, in Malcantone. In his documentary Outland (88') he focuses on a number of artists who in the recent years have arrived in Ticino and decided to stay, walking the fine line demarcation between breaking and making.
