Sergio (Julian Sands), a proud nobleman serving in the court of Charles III, learns that his beautiful bride-to-be (Nastassja Kinski) was once the king's mistress. Disillusioned, he turns his back on worldly life to become a monk and, ultimately, a saintly hermit but finds his quest for spiritual perfection ever threatened by the temptations of the flesh.
