Coming home to Indiana from Yale University, Porter (Cary Grant) is bitten by the songwriting bug and writes his first musical, which plays for one day before the U.S. enters World War I. Although he could have used his standing in society to avoid serving, Porter enlists. After the Armistice, Porter finds fame and fortune, if not marital happiness, writing music for Broadway. But at the height of his success, he is crippled in a polo accident and begins a heroic battle to regain the use of his legs.
