The atmospheric direction of Michael Curtiz lends visual luster to this strikingly pre-Code tale of racketeering, intrigue, and sin in Southeast Asia. Join Russian refugee Tanya Borodoff (Kay Francis, clad in an array of fabulous Orry-Kelly gowns) when she is suddenly abandoned in Yangon, Burma, by her lover (Ricardo Cortez) in a gun-running deal gone bad. An innocent girl caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, Tanya is forced to become the hostess of a notorious nightclub to make the best of a bad situation. Only when she finds love with an alcoholic doctor (Lyle Talbot) does she find her opportunity for redemption as they try to abandon their pasts together.
