Peter Ross (Alec Guinness), a World War II pilot photographer, is forced to land in Malta. There he finds himself attached to the local regiment and on studying aerial photographs he discovers that Italy is preparing to invade Malta. It is of vital importance that the island remains under the control of the Allies, and Peter is the man selected to trace and destroy the enemy convoy.
