Fabrice du Welz might be delivering his most ambitious film yet on every front. He revisits a case that was notorious in Belgium during the mid-90s and still sadly resonates with anyone old enough to remember it. Although "The Maldoror Dossier" doesn't carry the label "based on true events" because it claims to loosely draw inspiration from it, the similarities are undeniable. It’s well-researched, dense, and engrossing, focusing both on the investigation itself and the chaotic police response that surrounded the case and its high-profile developments. With its impeccable recreation, as murky as the case it depicts, the film suffers from just one significant flaw: the miscasting of Anthony Bajon in the lead role.
