In July 1839, in Yonville, widower Dr. Charles Bovary marries Emma Rouault, the spirited daughter of his patient and farmer, Mr. Rouault, from Les Bertaux. Emma struggles with her mother-in-law and soon grows bored with her husband's simple lifestyle. Two years later, at an agricultural fair, she begins an affair with the womanizer Rodolphe Boulanger. After Charles's unsuccessful surgery, Emma plans to move to Rouen with their daughter Berthe to live with Rodolphe, but he ends their relationship. In November 1842, while recovering from illness, Emma attends an opera in Rouen and starts a new affair with the young Leon. Facing debts of eight thousand francs to trader Lheureux, Emma seeks a loan to prevent asset seizure.
