A prominent newspaper faces a crisis when it labels affluent socialite Connie Allenbury (Myrna Loy) as a home-wrecker, prompting her to launch a multi-million-dollar libel lawsuit against the publication. The editor-in-chief, Warren Haggerty (Spencer Tracy), under immense pressure, devises a plan to undermine Connie's credibility. Enlisting the help of his stressed fiancée, Gladys Benton (Jean Harlow), and his charismatic friend Bill Chandler (William Powell), Haggerty sets in motion a scheme filled with humor and surprising twists as they attempt to shift the narrative in the newspaper's favor.
