The Lelièvre couple, a well-mannered bourgeois pair, hire a young maid named Sophie to help manage their large, isolated house in the Breton countryside. Sophie's tough, reserved, and nearly always silent demeanor puzzles them, even though her work is flawless. They never suspect that she is hiding her inability to read, which she finds humiliating. In the village, Sophie becomes friends with Jeanne, the lively yet secretive postmistress. The two women soon bond over their shared dislike for the Lelièvres. They also realize they have a shared history: both have been accused of murder. One is said to have killed her disabled daughter, the other her disabled father.
