Working from a script by auteur Agnieszka Holland, Wajda depicts the tragic true story of Dr. Henryk Goldszmit, a beloved children's writer and radio entertainer of the 1930s who, on witnessing kids from his Warsaw orphanage being shipped off to certain death in Treblinka, consciously chose to follow them to their fate. Featuring grave, haunting black-and-white photography from Müller, which puts the period before us with greater immediacy than any color treatment possibly could, and a fierce, fiery, and altogether captivating lead performance by Wojciech Pszoniak.
