April 2004, Iraq. On the Day of Ashura the militia of the Shiite cleric Muktada As-Sadr starts an uprising in the Polish stabilization zone. U.S. command orders the Poles to hold Karbala City Hall, the seat of the local authorities and police loyal to the stabilization forces. Kalicki, his soldiers, and Kamil, are among 40 Polish and 40 Bulgarian soldiers cut off from the world in rebellion-stricken Karbala, in what becomes the largest battle Polish soldiers have fought since World War II. For four days and nights the 80-man unit held off the terrorists, despite lacking food and expending almost all ammunition.
