Quebec, middle of the 19th century. As she attends the bedside of Jérôme, her dying second husband, Élisabeth recalls her youth, and her tumultuous marriage to her first husband, Antoine, who was the Lord of Kamouraska. It had not taken long for the love of this couple to dissolve in the mental illness, the cruelties and the drunkenness of the husband.Consequently, Élisabeth falls madly in love with an American physician, Georges Nelson, who has helped her give birth to her child. She will then incite the physician to dispose of her husband. The crime will be discovered and, in complete desperation, the woman eventually turns to this wealthy old man, now dying as she is watching over him.
