The film follows the shifting fortunes of a romantic triangle over the course of twenty years. It begins in Paris in 1912, where Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre), bohemian students and fast friends, both fall in love with the radiant and mysterious Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). World War I finds the two men fighting on opposite sides, but they resume their friendship after the war, and continue their shared interest in Catherine
