Johnny (Treat Williams) is a low-level gangster who moves his family from Los Angeles to Alaska attempting to elude the long arm of the law. When Johnny's wife is institutionalized for schizophrenia, their daughter Amy (Mia Kirshner) is sent to live with her grandmother. But Johnny, who was abandoned as a child, succeeds in persuading the courts to allow her return.
