Info
The story illustrates the solidarity of Poles with Polish Jews during World War II. Set in Nazi-occupied Poland, Joanna is trying to cope and survive after her husband is captured and taken to Oflag. In another part of the city, a Jewish woman and her daughter wander out of hiding in hopes of finding a sweet treat for the daughter's birthday. They find such a present in a café, when it is suddenly raided by Nazis. The woman is taken away by the Nazis but not before she hides her daughter. Joanna encounters the little Jewish girl hiding in a church. Despite the risk, she decides to take care of her. Joanna is an example of a true story as it reflects the behavior, resistance, and solidarity of thousands during Nazi occupation.
