When her parents are killed by an air strike while trying to flee Paris during the German invasion, a five-year-old girl (Brigitte Fossey) wanders into the countryside where she is befriended by an eleven-year-old peasant boy (Georges Poujouly). They build a special, secret friendship, trying to come to terms with the realities of death, ignored by the adults who play their own games of buffoonish peasant feuds.
