If one only views this series on a very surface level without giving it real thought, it might appear to be an often hilarious, dark, comedic farce that challenges us with a problem of an obese high school teen bullied, ignored & misunderstood. When her life straightens out, for lack of a better way to describe it, and she is a brand new slim beauty she is out for revenge on anyone who ever made her feel bad. The problem is that we never truly understand how far she will go to exact revenge on those who have wronged her. Similarly, we can never fully grasp (at least at first) the direction the series will take & how potentially dangerous it really is in what it puts before us.
Bullying is never right but the show seems to revel in something equally bad, namely seeking revenge. If that were the only issue in the show, it would still be offensive. However, INSATIABLE turns into a veritable car wreck of a series in which we see piles of damage. So besides the fat jokes and eventual revenge, it piles up bad and inappropriate material and makes it seem funny and acceptable, which it never is.
It starts to delve into a steady diet of stereotypes & behaviour not just about obesity and revenge but then does the same thing in regard to the LGBTQ++ community, Christians, Conservatives, Southerners, even African Americans and a whole lot more. Its so-called humour about serious issues such as pedophilia and statutory rape are not only insensitive but pretty disgusting. It is little wonder that NETFLIX cancelled the show after season 2. I truly believe most people were outraged by this horror story passing off as a dark comedy.
The show is impressive ONLY in its capacity to offend in one way or another - way too often. I feel badly for having put up with that level of bad behaviour & intolerable themes because in this day & age one should demand programs that are smarter in scope, more nuanced than "Insatiable" which, taken as a whole, is a messy, hurtful train wreck of a narrative that never realizes the harm it is doing.
