In a quiet town, a night watchman flees from the morgue where he is employed, only to meet a tragic end when he is struck by a vehicle. An inspector arrives to unravel the circumstances of the incident and soon uncovers a disturbing detail: the body of a woman who had recently passed away has vanished from the morgue. As the investigation deepens, the inspector turns his attention to the woman's widower, growing increasingly suspicious of his involvement in the mysterious disappearance.
