While the law hunts him, Jesse James hides as Tom Howard in St. Joseph, Missouri, with wife Zee urging him to cut ties with the Ford brothers. Robert Ford (John Ireland) risks everything to reunite with childhood sweetheart Cynthy Waters, an actress torn between manager Harry Kane and suitor John Kelley, who pleads for Bob's reform. Tempted by a governor's amnesty and reward, Bob shoots Jesse in the back on April 3, 1882, gaining freedom but losing Cynthy's love. His reenactment show flops; in booming Creede, Colorado, Bob strikes silver with prospector Soapy, woos Cynthy amid Kelley's rise as marshal, but Frank James's vengeful revelation of her true affections shatters him.
