Frenchman Henri Boulanger (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is let go after a fifteen year career in a waterworks company. Depressed and melancholy he considers suicide but lacking the courage he decides to hire a hit man to do the same job. But his life changes when he meets a flower girl and falls in love. Unfortunately he has trouble stopping the contract killer.
