Hondo Lane, a frontier scout, is captured by renegade Apaches while attempting to maintain peace between the soldiers at Arizona's Ft. Lowell and the local Indian chief, Vittorio. Threatened with a slow and painful death, Hondo is staked out and nearly subjected to hot coals on his chest, but Vittorio intervenes just in time to save him. Despite this rescue, tensions persist at the fort. Hondo is compelled to kill the husband of store-owner Angie Dow, earning the admiration of her young son.
