This 2004 epic ITALIAN film from Leone Pompucci, LA FUGA DEGLI INNOCENTI is such a magnificent work and knowing it all came to pass during WWII made it even more significant. What an incredible true story.
This magnificent film (on every level) deals with forty Jewish children from Yugoslavia who were blocked by the German and Italian occupation of the country as they attempted to leave for Palestine. With that failing, they eventually found refuge in Northern Italy in 1942, one year later.
It's a piece of "CINEMA VERITE" that crushes the spirit knowing the hardships of WWII especially for the JEWS persecuted throughout the duration of the war. It shows the savagery of man without an ounce of compassion even for young children. Those responsible for these horrendous acts, if not punished in this world, would indeed find their punishment for their terrorist and murderous ways in the next.
At close to 3 and 1/2 hours long the premise is covered so completely and our hearts break every step of the way.
A TOTAL MASTERPIECE.
