Youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick), a privileged young Boston Brahmin, assumes responsibility for training a regiment of free black soldiers for combat, only to discover the task far more challenging than anticipated as many of the men resist his authority. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) proves particularly defiant toward Shaw's leadership, yet the two gradually forge a mutual understanding amid the grueling trials of war.
